Vaginal Cytology
At River Grove Animal Hospital, we perform vaginal cytology on female dogs to enhance the success of pregnancy. For this, we take a swab of the vaginal cells and evaluate them carefully under a microscope. Usually more than one swab is required.
There are some additional tests we do such as a thyroid analysis. Make sure this test is being performed before her estrus cycle. These tests can detect any potential issue at the earliest stage and help in timely treatment.

Caesarean Section
Most animals give birth without any complications. However, some mothers need help with delivery. We try to solve the issue using medical therapy first, but if nothing helps then we go for a caesarean section.
During a c-section, the mother is given an anesthetic. An incision is made in abdomen and through the uterus to take the unborn puppies or kittens. It is advisable to spay the mother during this procedure to prevent any future problems.
